Upbeat Zumba music and the scent of BedHead hair products wafted out of the Bowling Green State University Student Union ballroom, inviting students to venture inside and join the “Be a Better U” event.

Last Friday, Salon Institute student stylists had the pleasure to team with the Bowling Green State University Activities Organization students and other amazing local businesses to put on a health and wellness event. This event designed to educate BGSU students on various easy, quick ways to put the stress to studying aside take care of themselves!
For 3 hours, BGSU students indulged in fitness, food and pampering. A local fitness instructor taught Zumba classes while physical therapists offered back and neck massages. Bowling Green State University Activities Office employees taught students to make stress balls and hot rice compresses with tube socks — an inexpensive form of therapy for college students who may be strapped for disposable income. They also had a station to create a sugar scrub for soft, dewy skin, and Salon Institute student stylists offered complimentary manicures and a braid bar. With so many scent options and the various lotions and potions in use, the room smelled amazing!
Not only did the businesses offer all of this for free, they also were educating students on how every aspect of the evening was designed to benefit the students’ health. Physical health wasn’t the only aspect addressed; enter Salon Institute, whose purpose was to focus on mental stress relief and relaxation. Bowling Green State University students started the 2015 fall semester just a few weeks ago. They are taking on the stress of classes but they also have homework, jobs, and social aspects all crowding their minds. For some, maybe this is the first time they have ever been away from home. Salon Institute student stylists wanted to help their collegiate sisters-in-arms unwind, relax and feel as beautiful as they are.
In their own educational journey, the event helped Salon Institute students to create awesome connections with Bowling Green students while learning to market themselves as a business, practice their trade, and also had the ability to learn more ways to take care of their own selves!
It was so good to see groups of girls coming to this event together and taking time to get involved. We even had one of BGSU rugby team players ask a Salon Institute student stylist redo his cornrows for his game the next day. We had such a great time being involved with this event! Not only did we get to help BGSU students take better care of themselves, all of us Salon Institute students and staff were reminded how important it is to care of your body. You only get one!
