Cancer survivor spotlight - Barb OxnerThe TIGI Creative School students recently joined the University of Toledo Lady Rockets basketball team and the Susan G. Koman foundation to raise awareness and funds toward fighting breast cancer.  We used the opportunity to provide a day of pampering  for a local cancer survivor, and put her in the spotlight during the Rockets for a Cure basketball game.

For this event, our students were privileged to honor Barb Oxner. Barb is a remarkable woman. A registered nurse and semi-retired nursing supervisor, she regularly volunteers with the American Cancer Society and Susan G. Koman foundation. A 30-year breast cancer survivor, Barb also was given just 6 months to live after being diagnosed with multiple myloma — 24 years ago.

Cancer survivor spotlight“My 24 and a half year anniversary is around the corner,” Barb said with a laugh, waving her hands in excitement. “God is good, that’s all I have to say.”

During her manicure, pedicure, wax and blow out, Barb shared stories and wisdom with her student stylists, punctuated frequently with a mischievous giggle. Barb’s spunk, tenacity and deep faith emulate true “fight like a girl” style, and the students and staff of the TIGI Creative school are proud to celebrate her.
